WHY MODERN DATING IS MORE A ‘GAME’ & LESS ABOUT PERSONALITIES

HOW TO GIVE FEEDBACK TO SOMEONE WHO CRAVES APPROVAL (HEY, DOVES)

While the perils of modern dating are intriguing to so many of us, it’s not just in romance that we’re seeing ‘gaming’ in the selection of people.

While the ‘swipe right, swipe left’ process might not be present in interviews (yet), finding the right person for a team usually involves the cookie cutter approach – who looks best on paper.

In fact, both in dating and hiring, we do the same thing. Singles put their best photos up, a bio about themselves and hope for ‘bites’ from eligible bachelors or bachelorettes. Job hunters give prospective employers an elevator pitch about their career, focusing on their most notable achievements and how prestigious their school was.

But, in either of these situations, how much of the person are we really seeing? Those potential love interests and hiring managers will make assumptions about that person, based on the photos or resume – but this is subjective and one very important thing is missing.

It all comes down to personality…

For any ladies reading this, have you ever been on a date with a guy that looked like the whole package? You soon discover that he’s just very ‘creative’ with his online profile. Maybe you’re running a business and got excited about a potential candidate who you thought would perfectly suit your brand… only to realise they weren’t a fit for your culture.

While it’s easy to focus on past performance and achievements, there’s so much more to a person than how their reference letters (or Tinder profile) makes them out to be. In a work setting, look for indicators such as the right kind of motivation – great ambition, deep personal humility and a curiosity to learn.

Whether you’re hiring for a new staff member or restricting your team for the New Year, avoid letting your assumptions guide your decisions. Their personality is so much more important than we realise. We’re not saying you should overlook their CV or LinkedIn profile, but before you make any decisions, take the time to understand their personality.

Identifying personal characteristics and values can be challenging, but there are resources available to help you with this – Tick’s personality profiling tools, for example. Fill in your details in the red form and we’ll send you a free sample of our tools so you can instantly understand these people. What you’ll discover will be so clear and intuitive that the team’s behaviour changes almost automatically (and your hiring process will improve, too).

And in dating? Well, we can’t tell you what you’re looking for in a partner. But, one thing’s certain: Even online in modern-day dating, personality still prevails.
