The facts are in. And, you won’t believe this. Scientists have concluded that some people are, in fact, jerks. Hey, we didn’t say it – researchers at the North-western University in Illinois did, in the journal, Nature Human Behaviour.

So, what are these four personality types?

1. Reserved
2. Role Models
3. Average
4. Self-Centred

Before we delve into this study, let’s preface by saying there’s an easier, more engaging personality test (that won’t offend anyone). It’s Tick’s personality profiling tool that, you guessed it, is based on four personality types, using birds as identification.

Okay, so back to the study. Just in case you’re wondering, personality data from 500,000 people was used to reach this conclusion. It certainly goes beyond the standard ‘introvert’ ‘extravert’ labels. With ‘Self-Centred’ being one of the four “jerk” (as the scientist referred to) personality types, you can understand why this list caused some controversy.

So, what did they find?

The Reserved group we’re open and not particularly extroverted, but otherwise agreeable and conscious of other people. Role models were high in every trait but neuroticism. They also appeared in greater numbers as people aged. Role models aren’t mean or rude, but kind and polite – always treating people with respect.

The Self-Centred people scored very high in extroversion but were below in agreeableness and openness. Think about a troublesome, male teenager. They’re more likely to be Self-Centred. This often changes with age, but not for everyone. Some people are just “naturally frustrating”, the scientists said.

While we’re a fan of any exploration into personalities, we have our own spin on the four types of people. And our version is easy to understand, informative, and won’t offend anyone.

1. Eagle: Loves authority & power
2. Peacock: Is the crowd-pleaser
3. Owl: The ‘numbers’ guy (or girl)
4. Dove: The nurturer & helper

Let’s put these into context for you. If we’re revisiting the four personality types the scientists identified, we might conclude that the Reserved group are our sweet Doves. The Role Models could our Peacock. The Average might resemble parts of the Owl, and the Self-Centred could remind us of the Eagle, in their quest to rise to the top. Sorry Eagles, you know we love you.
