Everyone learns in their own way, whether a student or an exec.

Think about how you absorb information. How do you learn best?

Some people connect with visual materials like charts and diagrams, while others learn better through discussion and verbal explanation. Understanding these differences is especially crucial for leaders, teachers, and parents.

The 7 learning styles

Here are the different ways people tend to best process information:

Visually: These learners absorb information best through photos, images, colours, mind maps, and diagrams. They benefit from seeing concepts represented spatially and often prefer organised, visually appealing materials.

Physically: Hands-on learners who need to engage with physical objects, draw diagrams, or use role-playing to grasp concepts. They're the ‘doers’ who learn by moving and manipulating their environment.

Verbally: These students process information through words, both spoken and written. They create acronyms to remember facts, write detailed notes, then read them aloud to reinforce learning. Language is their primary tool for understanding.

Aurally: Music, rhythms, recordings, and clever rhymes help these learners retain information. They often study better with background music and respond well to verbal instruction.

Logically: Systematic thinkers who use reasoning and structured approaches to understand concepts. These left-brain dominant students prefer clear sequences and logical progressions.

Socially: Group learners who thrive in collaborative settings and learn through interaction with others. They ‘feed off’ the energy of their peers and benefit from discussion-based activities.

Solitarily: Independent learners who prefer self-study and quiet reflection. They need time alone to process information and often perform better with individual assignments.

Left brain vs. right brain

Left-brain dominant people think logically, analyse information systematically, and focus primarily on facts and details. Right-brain dominant people think more creatively, follow their intuition, visualise concepts easily, and process information through feelings and imagination.

Put these two types in the same room, and they'll approach identical information in completely different ways.

Personalities + bird types

Once you identify how your people learn best, you can adapt your leadership methods to match their preferences. Take this one step further by doing a group exercise as a team to discover each individual’s Tick bird personality type.

It’s fun, insightful, and something you should do as a team at least once a year.
