5 TIPS TO IMPROVE HOW TO MANAGE YOUR TIME, WITH TICK BIRD TYPE INSIGHTS.
July 14, 2021

We’ve all sat in front of someone who is saying ‘yes, yes, yes’ but their hands are telling us ‘no’. We’re constantly sending signals, whether we know it or not. What comes out of our mouth is only part of what we’re communicating.

The way our bodies move, facial expressions, tones of voice and hand gestures often divulge how we really feel. While this article brushes up your understanding of body language, what will really set you apart as a communicator is learning how to decode personalities.

Because while body language might help you better grasp a situation, understanding personalities gives you deeper insights into the person.

But, more on this personality tool, further down

Okay, picture this: A broad-shouldered man, standing tall, shoulders back. He’s smiling, looking directly at you, guiding the conversation with hand gestures. His speech is slow, but calm and direct.

Now, compare this to a man who talks slouched, with his attention to the back of the room. He’s nervously fidgeting, eyebrows furrowed.

Who would you talk to, if you’re looking for an authoritative voice?

The first man, right?

Take note of non-verbal gestures

Keep in mind the different ways we ‘speak’, without words:

  • Body movements
  • Posture
  • Eye contact
  • Paralanguage (pitch, tone and speed of speech)
  • Facial expressions
  • Physiological changes (sweating).

Here are a few examples of using body language to your advantage:

  • To instantly connect with someone, shake their hand. Touch is a powerful non-verbal cue. According to Forbes, touching someone on the arm, hand or shoulder for as little as 1/40 of a second creates a human bond.
  • Use your hands to improve speech. Gesture is integrally linked to speech, which means demonstrably moving our hands as we talk can power up our thinking – and improve the verbal content.
  • Hold your head high. This will show that you’re confident and capable. It promotes authority and builds trust in whatever you’re saying.

Body language plays a key role in the way we communicate and work together. But, like we mentioned, the way someone is poised doesn’t tell you the full picture.

Don’t jump to assumptions. Make your decisions armed with real, scientific personality insights.

See, maybe that second man in the earlier example is, in fact, the better choice, but he doesn’t do well in front of crowds. He’s a leader, in one-on-one settings. He’s what we call a Dove – one of Tick’s four bird type personalities.
